THE HEALING POWER OF VOICE

Mohanji Chanting Process by Jelena Fassbender

The profound relationship between sound and healing has captivated humanity for centuries, but Jelena Fassbender’s journey into the transformative potential of voice takes this understanding to extraordinary depths. In this exclusive interview with The Awakening Times, Jelena opens up about the origins of the Mohanji Chanting Process (MCP)—a spiritual methodology birthed from a deeply personal and transformative experience during her time at the Mohanji Center of Benevolence in Scotland.

The Awakening Times (TAT): Could you share the story behind the creation of the Mohanji Chanting Process (MCP)? What inspired it?

Jelena Fasbender (JF): The Mohanji Chanting Process (MCP) was created in July, during my three-week stay at the Mohanji Center of Benevolence in Scotland. This time coincided with Guru Poornima and the Festival of Consciousness. Mohanji was also there, and what unfolded was completely unexpected.

On the first day, I approached Mohanji to greet him, but he didn’t respond as anticipated. Any disciple with a deep connection to a Guru knows that every action of a Guru has a meaning beyond the surface. Initially, I was shocked and even shed a few tears. Yet, deep down, I understood that Mohanji was deliberately acting this way—preparing me for something, something only he knew. I consciously detached from my emotions, quieted my restless mind as much as I could, and chose to observe rather than react.

As the days passed, one evening, Mohanji’s PA, Danny, offered to connect me with his friend—a musician and music producer from the US—for advice on promoting the Hearts Liberated album. During the call, as his friend listened to the song “Father,” his first words were: “You have a healing voice.” I immediately remembered how Mohanji once told me that he gave me a new voice. At that moment something shifted within me. It was as if everything aligned perfectly.

The next morning, I woke up with a profound realization: within our Mohanji family, we have many beautiful voices, that can be healing voices too. Why not create a process so that we could all become instruments of healing?

Inspired, I sat at my laptop, outlined the steps for the process, and sent them to Mohanji for review. He approved the concept and provided the mantras.

Finally, after two weeks of silence, Mohanji started talking to me. It was a glorious moment of relief.

And here we are today, sharing the transformative power of the Mohanji Chanting Process with the world!

TAT: Could you describe the moment you first realized the healing potential of your voice and how that realization influenced the creation of MCP?

JF: During the COVID period, I lived in Mohanji’s house in Bangalore for nearly six months. At that time, the house served as a spiritual crisis headquarters. Every day, Mohanji and Devi, with the help of Kamath, George, and Ananth conducted various programs. I was helping behind the scenes, too afraid to step in front of the camera and do something that, just a few years earlier, felt so natural. Overwhelmed by insecurities, I finally found the courage to offer a chant one evening.

I chose Sri Rama Rameti one of the most beautiful mantras and melodies I had ever heard. The chant was announced on Facebook and streamed live. Twice, the streaming failed. George, Devi, and Ananth were helping with the camera, but nothing worked. Despite the setbacks, I was determined—it felt like a test.

When we finally got the streaming working, my heart was pounding, but I sat calmly and began chanting. At one point, I completely lost my sense of reality. My entire body felt enveloped in a bubble of explosive energy. I couldn’t feel my tongue and mouth; it was otherworldly. When I finished, it took me a full 15 minutes to open my eyes. I still don’t know how I managed to stop the background music and move at all.

Then came the silence. Then tears—tears, and more tears. Soon after, messages from participants started pouring in. They were similarly overwhelmed by the experience and they enjoyed my voice too… That was the moment I realized: „ Wow, ok, it works, people like my voice. So, who am I to take ownership and stop its purpose?

That morning, in Scotland, this important insight resonated in my mind.

TAT: How do you perceive the connection between sound vibrations and emotional or physical healing?

JF: Sound vibrations play a powerful role in emotional and physical healing because every sound has a specific frequency that interacts with our body’s energy field.  Certain frequencies are grounding and calming, they help reduce anxiety and promote physical relaxation. Some resonate with our emotional centers, helping to release blocked emotions and foster emotional balance. High Frequencies like mantras, are designed to elevate consciousness and stimulate spiritual growth. When we chant or listen to mantras, their vibrations create harmony within us, facilitating deep healing and transformation.

TAT: What distinguishes chanting of mantras from simply listening to them? How does conscious intention enhance the effects of both?

JF: Chanting mantras actively engages the mind, breath, and voice, creating a powerful internal resonance. Unlike passive listening, chanting requires focus and presence, keeping us anchored in the NOW. This conscious engagement prevents the mind from wandering and strengthens our connection with the vibration.

When we chant aloud, the sound vibrations we produce resonate throughout our body, amplifying the mantra’s healing effects. This active participation intensifies the energy flow, creating a deeper transformation on emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.

TAT: Could you walk us through the structure of a typical Mohanji Conscious Process session? What can participants expect to experience?

JF: The Mohanji Chanting Process (MCP) begins with light exercises to warm up the body and a light vocal warm-up, to prepare the vocal cords. This helps prevent any strain on the throat and ensures that our voice flows effortlessly. Once our body and voice are warmed up, we move into a seated position, focusing on keeping the spine erect. This alignment enhances the better flow of energy.

After the protection method and bij mantras, we then dive into 30 minutes of chanting a specific mantra. We end the process with a gratitude song and experience sharing.

This structured approach allows us to fully experience the transformative power of sound vibration and the higher Consciousness that works through it.

TAT: How do you select the mantras used in MCP?

JF: Each mantra used in the Mohanji Chanting Process (MCP) has been personally given by Mohanji. They are carefully chosen to facilitate the highest spiritual elevation.

TAT: How does this process help address emotional, mental, or spiritual blockages and imbalances?

JF: Most of Mohanji’s processes, including the Mohanji Chanting Process (MCP), are specifically designed for deep cleansing and the removal of energetic blockages. What is specific about MCP is its strong focus on activating and aligning the central axis—the core energy pathway within us. By harmonizing this central energy channel, the process brings balance within us. The powerful vibrations generated through chanting help release stored emotions, dissolve mental clutter, and restore a smooth flow of energy through our chakras, leading to profound healing and spiritual elevation.

TAT: As an artist and healer, how do you merge your expressive talents as a singer with the spiritual and healing aspects of this work?

JF: Each of us is gifted with a unique talent meant to be shared with the world, helping others transform in one way or another. I got the voice.

Many years ago, I faced a creative crisis and couldn’t perform for quite some time. Mohanji’s guidance brought me back to my purpose. He enabled me to record a powerful song Guru Mohana, composed by Natesh Ramsel, an amazing kirtan musician from the US, in a studio in Kerala. After the recording, Mohanji told me: “Good, you have a new voice now. I gave you the new voice.” At the time, I didn’t fully understand his words, but that evening, in Scotland, I had full clarity of their meaning.

Through the creative process of making the song “Reimagine”, I realized and physically experienced a profound truth: I am not the doer. I am an instrument through which this energy flows. It was an incredibly liberating feeling to understand that I own nothing, that nothing is truly mine. I simply transmit what needs to be shared and I am deeply grateful for that opportunity.

TAT: Are there scientific studies or traditional teachings that inform or validate your understanding of the healing effects of voice and mantra chanting?

JF: I’m not qualified to speak on scientific research, but from what I’ve learned and experienced, we exist as vibrations that manifest into the physical world. Our voice is one of the most powerful ways we express our unique vibrational frequency. Scientifically, it has been proven that everything in our reality exists in a measurable waveform, including our thoughts, emotions, and the sounds we produce.

This is why we need to be mindful of what is coming out of our mouths. Each letter carries a certain frequency and acts like a program for our subconscious. If we constantly sing or listen to sad songs, we might amplify feelings of melancholy and many other negative thoughts. On the other hand, singing positive songs—or, even better, chanting mantras that are specifically designed to elevate consciousness—can create profound positive shifts in our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t express sadness through music—we all do that. But we should be cautious about using words and sounds that don’t serve us. Affirmative, high-vibrational chants and songs can work wonders, transforming not only our inner state but also the energy we project into the world.

TAT: Are there specific moments during sessions that you find particularly moving or transformative as a facilitator

JF: During the chanting, there is an all-encompassing presence, where nothing else exists and nothing else matters. There is a feeling of complete wholeness, within and without. In that moment, everything simply is.

TAT: How do you envision the future of MCP, and what impact do you hope it will have on global healing and growth?

JF: We are living in a very transformative time. The pace of life is accelerating, bringing with it increased challenges—calamities, wars, natural disasters, poverty, and internal struggles that we face daily. MCP is a powerful tool to help create inner stability amidst this chaos.

Ultimately, we all seek peace, both within ourselves and in the world around us. As Mohanji says: “We are the world we see outside.” By fostering peace and harmony within, we contribute to a more peaceful world. MCP offers a path to global healing and growth by guiding individuals toward becoming the best versions of themselves. In this way, MCP doesn’t just transform the individual—it can help shape a better world.

TAT: Is the MCP suitable for individuals who don’t consider themselves singers or feel insecure about their vocal abilities?

JF: Absolutely. Everyone is welcome to experience the process. It’s not about singing abilities, it’s about transformation.

TAT: Could you share your experience working with the first group trained in MCP? How did the training process unfold, and what were the participants’ reactions?

JF: There are now 10 trained Acharyas ready to conduct the Mohanji Chanting Process (MCP). Two of them have already led sessions in their local groups, and the response has been great. Some participants were so engaged and uplifted that they immediately asked when the next session would be.

TAT: Thank you, Jelena for sharing this beautiful process with the world, and this story with us.

JF: It was my pleasure. Thank you for this interview.
